Two police officers have been taken to hospital after they were attacked as they tried to make an arrest.

The officers were pursuing a man who fled the scene following reports of a fight in Ellesmere Port earlier this morning.

But they ended up being attacked themselves as they tried to do their job.

A Cheshire police spokesperson said: "At around 8.30am on Monday (July 20) police were called to reports of two men acting aggressively on Westminster Road, Ellesmere Port.

"Officers attended the scene and arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of criminal damage.

"A second man fled the scene and was chased by officers on foot.

"Officers subsequently located the man and he was also arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

"During the arrest two officers were assaulted.

"Both officers were taken to hospital to be checked over – one has been released and one remains in hospital at this time."
